Sew Fun!

A few months back, I spotted these owls on Moonstitches blog. She was kind enough to post a tutowlrial and I linked it and saved it and while it was always in the back of my mind, I just didn't have the time to make any. She mentioned that you cannot stop at just one, and she was right! I've made four already and I want to make some more. These come together so quickly and then the whole family had fun picking out eyes from my vintage button stash. Even Hubby joined in on the button hunt!

I modified the pattern a little bit and made them with soft bottoms instead of cardboard bottoms. I wanted to be able to let the little ones play with it and not worry about the cardboard getting bent. These are just too cute!

While we were at the flea market last Saturday, we spotted this super cool Formica top table and chairs. I LOVE this set! If we didn't already have 4 sets at home (yes, 4 sets!), this one would have come home with us! I love that turquoise blue on the chairs and it was in really fabulous condition! Good thing there was no price on it, because if it had been the right price, I would have bought it, never mind if there was no room in the van, I would have found a way to shove it in there and stick the chairs on the roof and rope 'em down. I would have talked Hubby into coming back for it or something!

4 sets of tables you ask? Well.. we just love stuff from the 50's, and we got our first set from a consignment shop at the old place. Cute little red number with 4 matching chairs. Then a while later, I was at the thrift shop and spotted a cool grey and black set with matching chairs for a cheap $75! We hoped to sell it at our store one day, but our store never came to be and it is sitting in our basement at the moment. Then Hubby's aunt asked us if we wanted Grandma's table and we jumped at it. It's the red table you see in pictures that we use for our dining table. All the chairs were in bad shape, so we weren't able to salvage them, but we pulled chairs from the other sets we have. The fourth table we have is a pink one! How often do you see pink?? 'Nuff said! It came with 2 red chairs that obviously didn't go with it, but I plan to recover the chairs when I get the perfect material to match the table. So, that's how we ended up with 4 sets of 50's tables.

You are soooo refreshing in this day and age when most want to COMPETE AND BE BETTER THAN THE JONES!

I think your merchandise will do well on eBay. "The 50s" is a popular phase right now. Good luck and best wishes from Lantana.

Just stopping by to say Hi. I read your comment on cruncy chicken's blog.

Cool table. I agree with lantana in that there could be a profit had in turning some of that stuff around.

I've never been to an auction but I know that's how my parent's furnished their house when they were married 56 years ago, and they still have very nice things.

What a shame you didn't get the set in the picture. I actually grew up in the era (well, the 60s) when everyone had one of those sets in their kitchens. They've aged well, haven't they. Can't say the same for myself though.

Those "old" "Chrome Dinette sets" were so beautiful to all of us!! I recall that mine was grey Formica on top with pearl grey seats, not SHINEY grey, but a dull grey like cloth and the legs were "Duncan Phyfe" (Spelling?????). Turquoise was and still is one of my favorite decorating colors! I am lucky because I live at the beach and that color fits right in. Our bedroom is turquoise and peach and off white! Mountain Mama, you have the best blog of all for women, we all really enjoy you! Right now we are having our kitchen cupboards "refaced". WHAT A MESS. But it is going to look so much better and alot cheaper than a kitchen full of brand new wooden cabinets! Hugs, Lantana

I love the old fifties stuff - used to have some back in Canada but you don't get it over here... you are insatiable, I have to say! You should try selling some of them on ebay, it's a good idea except the buyer would have to pick up...

Lantana-- Aww, you're so sweet to say that! As my title in the header says, What you see is what you get. I don't pretend to be anything other than what I am! I know I am marching to the beat of my own drummer, and I am perfectly happy to do so!

I do sell lots on ebay, but nothing big like tables or furniture.

Verde-- Welcome!! I love seeing new readers! I don't go to auctions much (though there are thousands here in the country) because I cannot hear the auctioneer. No babysitters nearby to leave the kids and take the hearing hubby, so we try our luck mostly at yard sales and thrift shops. Lots of good yard sales up here!!

Coffee-- If money was no object, I would have gotten the set, but as it is, we can't be spending our money on stuff we don't need. I was afraid to ask the price, because if it had been low enough, I would have gotten it. I'm still thinking about it and am staying away from the flea market for awhile!!

Lantana-- I do love those sets! My mom has a set from her mother that was supposed to come down to me. It was my Grandmother's very first BRAND NEW piece of furniture she ever bought after my Grandfather died. I never imagined that we would have gotten my husband's grandmother's table and then 3 more along the way. I need to part with a couple but sometimes that's hard to do!! Good luck with the kitchen re-do. I'll come and help dust when it's over! :o)

Dj-- Aren't those owls cute?? I have some different fabric combinations I want to try next! And that table.. sigh. It sure is a cooooool set!

Sparx-- Really? Nothing like this over there?? Did they miss the art deco period or something? I see stuff like this all the time around here, but usually in the more common colors like yellow or white or the yucky browns. Not very often to see turquoise blue! I've been told that red was hard to find, and yet I have 2 and my mom has a red one also. Go figure!
Believe it or not, those kinds of tables don't do very well on ebay. I see them going for cheap! Too cheap!
